Advance Directives
Why is advance planning important?
Everyone should spend time planning for their future. This includes creating a will or an estate plan to make sure their wishes are followed. For someone with Alzheimer’s disease, planning ahead is especially important. Right now, they might still be able to make decisions about their health and money, but as the disease gets worse, they’ll need others to help make choices for them.
Planning ahead lets people stay in charge of their own healthcare and financial decisions. It also helps families avoid tough decisions later. By planning early, the person with Alzheimer’s can work with their family, doctors, and legal advisors to make decisions before they lose the ability to do so.
What are healthcare directives?
Healthcare directives, or advance directives, are legal forms that let you share your choices about end-of-life care before you need them. These forms help you tell your family, friends, and doctors what you want, so there’s no confusion later.
You can get legal documents made by a lawyer. Free forms and more information about advance directives are also available through the Texas Department of Aging and Disability.
