Internship FAQs

If you would like to be notified when the internship application opens and receive information on our other early career programs at DSHS, fill out this form to be added to our listserv.

There is no deadline for internship applications. The application will be open for around one month, but positions are filled and removed from the survey on a rolling basis. We recommend submitting your application within the first two weeks.

If you are selected to interview for a position, you should expect to hear back within one month of the application opening. Please be patient as our host-site managers receive a high volume of applications.

We offer internships for undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. If you are unsure if you are eligible for an internship at DSHS, contact internships@dshs.texas.gov to discuss specifics.

We offer virtual, hybrid, and in-person internships that vary by host site. Make sure to read the internship description for specifics.

Please note that all interns, remote or not, must be able to pick up and return DSHS equipment at a Texas DSHS office at the start and end of their internship.

Internship topics will vary between semesters. There is no guarantee that a specific topic will be available every semester. Please check the available internships during a specific semester to find your best-fit internship.

Internship start and end dates vary between internships. Start and end dates are decided by the intern and their host site. Internship applicants who are invited for interviews should clarify this with the host site.

Applicants are not notified if they were not selected as interns. 

Internships are not paid.

Yes, international students can apply for internships. This is because internships are not paid. Our office can provide a CPT letter.
